Enjoying Your Staycation Requires Just a Little Planning

m always planning something!  If you are like me, one of your favorite past times is planning your next vacation.  After all, you want to make sure you take advantage of everything that the exotic destination you selected has to offer.  But it doesn’t always have to be a faraway destination.  Incredibly, many of us live in areas that are brimming with fun-filled activities (and are vacation destinations for others around the World), yet we fail to take the same approach to planning our local fun.  If you have a staycation scheduled for this summer, or simply a long weekend, consider the following activities:

The Top 10 Things to Do on a Staycation

  1. Talk to the animals. Your local zoo or aquarium is often holding special events, and the summer can be a great time to see the baby animals at play.
  2. Head to the beach, lake or local pool. If you are looking to cool off, head to the local body of water nearest you.
  3. Go to an outdoor performance. The warm weather provides an opportunity to see outdoor shows and festivals.  See what is happening in your local area and get out there!
  4. Go to a ballgame. There are many minor league teams (our favorite is the New Jersey Jackals) that offer family fun with old style entertainment between innings.
  5. Take a cruise. You can “circle it on the Circle Line” or take a twilight cruise at a local harbor, lake or river.
  6. Go for a bike ride. Whether around a park or your neighborhood, getting out in the fresh air helps relieve stress and is good exercise
  7. Play a round of gold (or mini-golf). Pebble Beach may be a stretch, but the local mini-golf course offers many of the same thrills and only requires one club!
  8. Binge-watch a series. If the weather is uncooperative, you can always sit down on the couch and catch up on that series that all your friends have been talking about.
  9. Board games. Hone those competitive skills and take on your friends and family in Scrabble or Rumikub.  It is also a great time to converse and catch up with those closest to you.
  10. Unplug and take a nap. Nothing beats swaying in the hammock with a book and cool beverage.

The main objective of any staycation is to break out of your daily routine and enjoy the now.  With a little proper planning, this can easily be a mission accomplished!
