Do Beauty Products Equal Money Down the Drain?

Although it’s sometimes challenging to do, I try to live minimally. It’s a way of life I try to show my children as well. Sure, every now and then I can’t help but splurge on a nice purse or a lavish dinner, but I don’t make a habit of it. Recently, I had to have a talk with my eldest daughter Caroline about her spending habits at Sephora. It was just the other day I walked into her room and saw a plethora of makeup and beauty products scattered amongst her vanity, as if she had the entire store right in her room.

If you can relate to Caroline, I encourage you to save your money and use up all the beauty products you already have at home before buying anything new. The typical American woman has about $2,000 worth of beauty products in her home right now. Yet, the average American woman will still spend $8 a day on makeup and skin care products! That’s almost $3,000 a year! (How insane is that?!). That’s $3,000 extra dollars you could use for your children’s tuition or a vacation. It can even be tucked away into a savings or investment account.

Before you make that next trip to CVS, Macy’s, Sephora (wherever you buy your makeup), ask yourself – how many beautifying lotions, mascara wands, and anti-wrinkle eye serums do you actually need? And if you’re looking for other money saving tips or budgeting advice, give us a call today.  We are here to help you take control of your financial future!
